The Yercaud Lake/ Big Lake/ Emerald Lake is undoubtedly a must-visit place in Yercaud. It was named as Emerald Lake as it is the only natural lake among all the hill stations in the South of India and it can rightly be the topmost sightseeing place in Yercaud. It is located within a distance of 1.5km from the Yercaud Bus stand. Cab and Auto facilities are available from Yercaud Bus stand. The lake is surrounded by perfectly trimmed green grass, little shrubs and well-manicured flower gardens which enhances the beauty of the lake. One can indulge in various fun activities like boating, cycling, balloon shooting, etc.. It has both self-pedalling and rowing boats(no self rowing is allowed, one the staff of the boathouse will row the boat) with the minimum time spent can be 15 minutes. Boat services are available at a reasonable rate which is 110 INR for 2 seats and 140 INR for 4 seats in case of pedalling boats and Rs. 90 for 3 seater and Rs. 120 for five-seater rowing boats. One must also pay the caution deposits for boats which will be refunded later. The soothing music of cold water, the sound of the breeze from the garden and trees, and the freezing cold of hill station will give you a heavenly experience during that 15 to 20 minutes of boating. As the name implies, it is a 32 kilometres long stretch which starts from the Yercaud lake leading through the villages of Semmantham, Nagalur, Manjakuttai and Kaveri Peak. The road has almost 20 hairpin bends passing through rich coffee plantations and dense forest. It is intertwined between Shevaroy Hills on both the sides with silver oaks and white Eucalyptus trees helping you to feel the mixture of the aroma of coffee beans and eucalyptus making it one the top sightseeing places in Yercaud. One will be mesmerised with the views and the local food, language and lifestyle. On the whole, your ride along the road would be the most memorable, breathtaking and at times scary as it has so much hairpin bends with almost no one seen on the road.
The Killiyur waterfalls which is ranked as the best sightseeing place in Yercaud with family. It is located 4 km from the Yercaud Lake and the best way to reach the falls is to hire a private vehicle and there is sufficient place for parking. The timings for the falls is between 8 am to 6pm and the entry is completely free. Travellers must be able to trek along the road and climb around 200 to 250 concrete steps in order to reach the falls. There are adequate seating and resting places near the stairs for elderly people and hence it is a must-visit sightseeing place in Yercaud. The best time to visit the Killiyur falls is during the day just after the monsoon as the water levels are too high during the monsoon season. Don?t return back without taking a bath in the falls in order to have a complete experience.
A must visit top sightseeing place in Yercaud would be the Bear?s cave which is located in a private coffee estate near to the Norton Bungalow on the way to the Servaroyan Temple. The main area of the cave is about 7 feet below the ground level and there is a belief by the local community that the cave leads to the other cave situated in the Servaroyan Temple. Recently, it has become a private property and one cannot have access without permission.
The lady?s seat which offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Mettur Dam and the Salem District is one of the top sightseeing places in Yercaud. It is a single rock formed in the shape of a seat providing astonishing views of the mist, clouds, flora and fauna. The best time to visit the place is on a sunny day or during the evenings to have the mesmerizing views of the sunset. It is believed that once upon a time, Lady?s Seat was the favourite recreational spot of British women for their hangouts, chit chats and evening parties. There is also a watchtower available for the visitors only during clear sky days which offers a telescopic view for INR 5.
The Shevaroy Temple which is located 7 km from the Yercaud Bus stand is situated on the highest point of the flat-topped Shevaroy hills. It is a 2000-year- old cave temple dedicated to the Lord Shevaroyan and Goddess Kaveri. One can reach the temple via private vehicles and must indulge in trekking. The temple is open between 8:30 am to 7 pm. The natives celebrate their annual festival in the temple premises during the month of May. As the temple is located on the highest point of the Yercaud hills, it offers breathtaking views of several mountains, plains, valleys and the whole town of Yercaud and Nagalur.
